kenny i love this.. the beat and riffs are all very lively and catchy.. I could say in 2007 that those "sounds" like the drums and synth don't sound that hot anymore but i think we can call that retro since it was written and played in the 80s - and I think the kids will love it mo better as is.. those are exciting video game sounds to them I'm sure.. thanks for gettin our kids into beat music man.. all the best :-) 4x

Wow, I wish I could stay up and have a Kenny Powell marathon, but it's going to be another long day tomorrow.

Very interesting song, got me moving to the beat, which surprises me because I wasn't in the mood to move. Have you had kids dancing to this one? What I heard was that kids need to move and explore their bodies with movement, and since this is such a wide open song, kids (and anyone else) could dance their own dance and not what Britney or whoever is popular now is doing?

Did you ever consider adding a little bass for dramatic effect? It might balance the high notes out some. Still, a great song! Really cool!

Thanks for sharing,

Dan

Hi Kenny,
Great to see you back here and still putting out great music!!!

I started listening to this song in a slightly bad mood (long, difficult day at work) and now I'm doing much better. Thanks. Sometimes it sounded like the vox was just a touch too forward in the chorus, but maybe the kids would like that. As usual, great message for the kids about enjoying themselves and also that there is a time for seriousness. Also, loved the scream in the beginning.

Thanks for sharing.

Sunday single: Just for kids
By Chris Macias - Bee Pop Music Critic

Sacramento Bee

St. Stephen's Child Development Center in El Dorado Hills has the funk. Walk into the playroom, and you'll see preschoolers stretching their arms as if they're trying to raise the roof while a keyboard riff wiggles from a boombox.

Leading the romper room is Kenny Powell, but like the kids, you can just call him "Mr. Kenny." He's like the George Clinton of pre-K education, a musician who leads singalongs -- and probably serves lots of crackers and milk -- while encouraging a funky good time. Mr. Kenny's mission is to add R&B flavor to children's music.

His song "Let's Be Silly" is this week's "Sunday Single," and it's a funky jam for the sippy-cup set. To hear "Let's Be Silly," log on to www.SacTicket.com/sundaysingle. And please, no pushing, or Mr. Kenny might put you on timeout.

"It goes over great," says Mr. Kenny about his music. "They're already listening to their older brothers' and sisters' music, and it's not always appropriate. That was my idea: to have funky R&B music and sneak in educational stuff while having fun with it.

"Children's music has a never-ending source of fans," he adds. "There will always be preschool kids."

Mr. Kenny has taught preschool for two decades, and once moonlighted as an R&B singer when not trying to put kids down for nap time. His own dream was to be in the music business, singing and performing like his idols, Stevie Wonder and James Brown.

Mr. Kenny found his niche by mixing Cameo-style grooves with songs for kids, a sound that sure beats listening to "Barney" CDs over and over. He released an album called "Preschool Jam!" and when he played it for his young students, everyone went bonkers.

"There was a song on 'Preschool Jam!' called 'Dinosaurs,' " says Mr. Kenny. "That used to be one of my old songs called 'Let's Destroy,' which in musical circles is something like 'tear the roof down.' It had this groove like when you think of a Tyrannosaurus rex. The kids, parents and teachers loved it. The kids will do their own dinosaur movements, everyone will start roaring and stomp their feet. It's a lot of fun."

"Let's Be Silly!" will be featured on the second volume of "Preschool Jam!" which is due later in the year. And Mr. Kenny can still be found in the classroom, getting the kids to dance and encouraging them to get goofy every now and then.

"Let's Get Silly!" is more than a song for Mr. Kenny -- it's instruction that's appropriate for all ages.

"I like getting silly with the kids myself," says Mr. Kenny. "Teaching can either age you or keep you young. I decided on the latter. I just think it's important for people of any age to get silly, to just 'act the fool' sometimes."

Mr. Kenny's Neighborhood

This preview of "Sunday Single" is brought to you by the letter "p" and the word "funk." The "p" stands for pre-school, which is what Kenny Powell (a.k.a. "Mr. Kenny") teaches when he's not making music. The "funk" refers to Mr. Kenny's style of childrens' music - make that a "preschool jam" like his song "Let's Be Silly!" You can read more about Mr. Kenny in Sunday's Ticket+ section. Here's a taste of what Mr. Kenny and his music is all about:

This is the text of my interview with Brian Ralston, AKA "selftort", who maintains the Children's Music Genre Spotlight at Mixposure, an indie music website, now discontinued:

INTERVIEW WITH KENNY POWELL

I am honoured to conduct the first interview in "The Nursery", the Mixposure Children’s Music Genre Spotlight, with Kenny Powell.

For those who don’t know, because not enough of you come in and visit the Nursery, Kenny joined mixpo in August, 2006 and has uploaded 12 songs, with 9 of them in the Children’s Genre (the other three are Christmas songs that I’d suggest you download to play during the festive season that is fast approaching).

Kenny also has a CD "Preschool Jam!" that we will hopefully here more about in this interview.

BRIAN: Firstly, Kenny, welcome to Mixposure, and particularly welcome to the Nursery and thanks for sharing your kids’ songs with us.

KENNY: Thanks for having me, Brian! I was glad to see that an outstanding independent music site like Mixposure even had a children’s music section.

BRIAN: If I can start with a "chicken and the egg" question first, Kenny. Many of us are used to getting the question, do you write the lyrics or the music first. In your case, as I understand it from your profile, you’re a Pre-Kindergarten Teacher as well as a writer/composer/performer. Which came first, the music or the dealing with children

KENNY: I have absolutely no rules when it comes to writing music. In fact, because of my strong funk influence, I often write the bass line first. To answer the second question, music came first. When I was 24, I had saved enough money to buy a synthesizer, a drum machine, and a 4-track cassette recorder. So, all of the songs that I had written and arranged in my head for years were finally able to be made tangible for others to hear, and I've been a virtual one-man recording band ever since! I got into children's music because I saw how kids loved the music that their older siblings listened to, but most of the lyrics were inappropriate for them. I wanted to give preschool-age kids jammin' music with a positive and educational message.

BRIAN: When did you take up teaching young children

KENNY: In the early ‘80s, my mother owned and operated a preschool-daycare centre. When the enrolment went up, she needed help, so I took the necessary college courses and began working at her centre. When she closed the centre, I continued to teach, and I’m still a preschool teacher today.

BRIAN: It’s interesting that you mentioned earlier that younger kids like the music of their older siblings. I remember growing up as a really young kid in the 50s and listening to my brother’s music which was early rock and roll. But when I was growing up the sort of songs we learned at school bore no relationship to the sort of music that we would hear out of school. They were generally very traditional folky sorts of tunes. I notice that you funk things up a lot more in your music. How do the kids respond to this

KENNY: The kids LOVE it! They still enjoy singing traditional tunes, but they get bored pretty fast without variety.

BRIAN: I assume from what I’ve heard of your music, and the title of your CD "Preschool Jam!" that the songs on the CD are aimed at the pre-kindergarten market, although I assume that they would appeal to children beyond that specific demographic.

KENNY: People of all ages love the grooves, but the lyrics are specifically for kids 5 and under.

BRIAN: Dealing with the particular age groups that you are pitching at, I’m interested to know what particular qualities do you need to focus on for your writing. From what I’ve heard of your songs, they have a strong rhythm. Is that something you particularly look for?

KENNY: Definitely. Also, the songs need to be able to get – and keep – the kids’ attention.

BRIAN: Are there any other, I guess, disciplines, that you need to adopt when writing to children of this age

KENNY: Don’t make the songs too long! Get your message across quickly and simply, so you don’t lose the kids’ attention. Also, no long intros; get to the point. Keep the lyrics and melody simple; then you can add your own style.

BRIAN: What was the catalyst for you to get a CD out there? Were you given encouragement by parents and/or other teachers or did you just see a relatively untapped area available?

KENNY: I was strongly encouraged by many people to release "Preschool Jam!" I was also encouraged by the fact that a preschool children’s music band called the Wiggles are the highest-grossing entertainers in Australia, outgrossing Nicole Kidman, Russell Crowe, and AC/DC! They proved that marketing to very young kids can be very lucrative.

BRIAN: And what has the response to the CD been?

KENNY: The response from kids, parents and teachers has been overwhelmingly positive!

BRIAN: How have you tried to market the CD and where can the CD be purchased?

KENNY: I market the CD on my website: http://www.preschooljam.com

and it’s available for purchase there. I also contribute to online teacher and parent forums that have classified sections (I read the Terms and Conditions first to make sure that self-promotion is OK) being a preschool teacher, I have a lot to offer these sites, and I've joined sites like Mixposure and SoundClick. I've also marketed very successfully to school districts and fitness programs for kids. I entered a children's music awards contest, and "Preschool Jam!" won a 2006 Children’s Music Web Award for Best Recording for Preschoolers ages 3 to 5. Locally, I just do a lot of legwork to get the word out and generate word-of-mouth. Recently, I was featured in the entertainment section of my local newspaper (the Sacramento Bee), and from that I was asked to appear on a local TV morning show called Sacramento & Company.

BRIAN: As a matter of interest, for others with CDs out there, looking for marketing opportunities, did your local paper approach you or did you approach them

KENNY: I approached them. The Sacramento Bee has a column called "In The Hot Seat" in its Scene (entertainment) section. The column features interesting local people who are little-known or unknown. I e-mailed one of the reporters about appearing in the column. Several weeks later, I was featured with color pictures of me and my CD, and a nice interview. It took up about ¼ of the page! The column was also shown on the paper’s website with a link to my "Preschool Jam!" site. And it was all free!

BRIAN: Who do you consider to be your musical influences?

KENNY: In terms of Children’s Music, Kids' artists Greg & Steve are my biggest influences.

BRIAN What about musical influences, generally?

KENNY: Stevie Wonder, James Brown, Earth, Wind & Fire, and George Clinton are the ones who initially influenced me to make music. Even though I was born in '62, I firmly consider myself a child of the '70s! When I was growing up there was only one R&B/soul radio station in Sacramento, and it would only broadcast from 4 pm to midnight. Many times, the signal wasn't very strong, especially if it wasn't a clear night! Because of this, we spent most of our time listening to Top 40 stations, where we would hear everything from Led Zeppelin to the Stylistics, from the Captain and Tennille to Parliament/Funkadelic, and everything in between. It was a very rich and diverse musical experience, and it turned out to be a great musical education for me, although I certainly didn't know it at the time.

BRIAN: Have you ever thought about taking the kids’ songs out live and touring?

KENNY: I would love to play live, but I would have to put a band together first. My music doesn’t lend itself to just playing an acoustic guitar, like most kids’ music artists.

BRIAN: I know there’s probably not much time, but when you’re not teaching or working on your music, what do you get up to?

KENNY: Aside from teaching and music, my interests and activities include weight training, swimming, sports, movies, and reading the newspaper.

BRIAN: Kenny, it’s great to have you on board on mixposure. Thanks for taking the time to give us a bit of insight into your music and yourself. I’m sure I speak for all mixpo members in wishing you all the best of success with your CD. Have you another in the pipeline?

KENNY: My pleasure, Brian! I definitely plan to release "Preschool Jam! – Volume 2" in the future. Also, I will upload more kids’ songs, and some Christmas songs, in the next few weeks. Please support the Nursery, and I’ll keep doing what I can to pump it up!

BRIAN: For those who haven’t experienced Kenny’s music, head on over to his page at or visit his site at http://www.preschooljam.com

In the hot seat: Fondness for music, kids adds up to a fun CD
We talk to the people you'll be talking about tomorrow
By Lisa Heyamoto - Bee Staff Writer

Kenny Powell's CD of original and updated tunes for tots is called "Preschool Jam!"
Sacramento Bee/Michael A. Jones

Kenny Powell spends his days teaching lessons to preschool kids, but one day, the 44-year-old Sacramento resident decided to put two and two together himself. He loved working with kids, he loved making music -- why not, he figured, combine the two?

"Music is my first love and teaching is my second," he says. "Putting it all together just made perfect sense."

So, using recording equipment he's had for years, Powell put together a CD of original and updated classic tunes for tots called "Preschool Jam!" With his 1,000 copies going fast at www.preschooljam.com, Powell says, he's already got another 15 songs in his head for a sophomore album.

We put Powell in the Hot Seat.

Q: What's your middle name?

A: Bryan, with a "y."

Q: What was your childhood ambition?

A: There were so many of them, but I know I wanted to play wide receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers. I was a big Lynn Swann fan.

Q: What would you do with a spare $100?

A: I think I'd buy stuff for my nieces and nephews.

Q: Oscar the Grouch or Big Bird?

A: I guess I'd go with Big Bird, because grouchiness is not really a part of my personality.

Q: What's your signature karaoke song?

A: It would probably be "My Cherie Amour" by Stevie Wonder. Stevie Wonder is my No. 1 musical influence. I love singing his songs.

Q: When did you first know you were into music?

A: In elementary school, they had a music aptitude test, and I tied for the highest score. I got my dad to get me a saxophone because I really loved James Brown at the time and I wanted to play all those saxophone hits. I think I stayed with that for maybe two or three weeks.

Q: What was your most recent meal?

A: I brown-bag it when I go to work, so (lunch) is usually a basic refuel -- it's basically a sandwich and chips.

Q: If you were stranded on a desert island and could only sing three songs (which admittedly is a weird question), what would they be?

A: "Shining Star" by Earth, Wind & Fire. Definitely "Ribbon in the Sky" by Stevie Wonder, and another song that most people don't know called "Heaven Is Ten Zillion Light Years Away." "Shining Star" (is a song I used to sing) as a kid, and it just made me feel 10 feet tall and it still does today. "Ribbon in the Sky" is simply the most beautiful song I've ever heard, and "Heaven" is another beautiful song, but it has a spiritual message that I love.

Q: Describe Sacramento in one phrase.

A: Just right. It's not too big and it's not too small.

Kenny has unbelievable energy, the kind of energy parents wish they could
summon sometimes when their little bundles of joy start getting the best of
them. Well, now they can: just pop PreSchool Jam into the CD player. You'll be
amazed watching your kids burning off all that excess pizazz all the while
learning a thing or two (Shhh! Don't tell them!).

Keep your distance however, or you'll get caught up in the groove also!

Nice update on the old ABC song. Like the funky beat and a great bass line to get the kid's wiggling along. Great stuff.

As the mod of the Children's Genre Spotlight here at mixpo I've been a bit slack of late, largely because there are very few posts in the genre.

This is a great song for kids. Dinosaurs were something that intrigued me as a kid and I'm sure still fascinate kids today.

Excellent lyrics which would keep kids interested. Love the chorus. It's got a real hook to it that kids and adults can sing and dance to. Like the way that you haven't tried to "dumb" the music down.

Thanks for sharing and for reminding me I need to do some work on the Spotlight.

Cheers

Wow I am very impressed. Sounds almost like it is coming right off a childrens TV show. And if that is you singing - your voice is perfect. In fact when I listened to Dinosaurs I was thinking this music is not only children's music but that piece sounds like it would fit in a broadway show with YOU SINGING IT! -- no kidding I am serious.

Preschool Jam is a great CD for anyone who works with children or has children. It has classics and great new songs that involve the children and even get them moving! Teaching preschool in the summer and third grade during the school year, I can think of many occasions when Preschool Jam will be used in my classrooms. I can recommend this CD without reservation.
I feel Kenny Powell's "Preschool Jam!" is an exciting children's CD. The kids here love it; the "DINOSAURS!" and "Quiet Time" songs are their favorites. I recommend this CD to anyone with young children.

Kenny is a former teacher here at the Poppy Patch Child Care Center. He recently brought us a copy of his "Preschool Jam!" CD. The children really enjoy listening to "Preschool Jam!" We play the CD so often, we've almost worn it out! All the children have their favorite songs. Kenny brought the light and enjoyment of music to our school. All in all, Kenny is great when it comes to music and children! The children here at the Poppy Patch love him very much.

Some informal feedback, and an interesting anecdote from your host, Kenny:

One of my nieces works in the JET (Japan Exchange and Teaching) program teaching English to children of various grade levels in Japan. I mentioned to her that I had put together a children's CD, and she asked me for a copy. Because she teaches basic English to her students, she thought it might be helpful. Since then, she told me that "Preschool Jam!" has become an important part of her curriculum. She also sent me an e-mail describing the songs as "excellent," and wrote, "I hope you pursue recording and marketing your CDs. It is nice to have some children's songs that don't give me a headache, and besides, kids like to boogie too!!!"
More informal feedback as related by me, Kenny:

My 8-year-old great-nephew LOVES the CD!!! Even though he's many years ahead of the subject matter, he's totally into the music! His mother (another of my nieces) told me that my great-nephew, and his cousins and friends, know all of the words to "DINOSAURS!"
From a parent at St. Stephen's Child Development Center, El Dorado Hills, CA, where I currently teach:

Dear Mr. Kenny,

Thank you SO much for the wonderful CD! What a talent you have.

We have been singing and dancing now for days. VERY much appreciated.
Note from Kenny:

My fellow St. Stephen's CDC teachers and I have used "Preschool Jam!' extensively at the center. The kids really get into it, and I have been encouraged by their reaction, and by positive feedback from the teachers, to make "Preschool Jam!" available for purchase.
